How Much Does It Cost To Skydive for The First Time In The US?

The average cost of a tandem skydive here in the States is $250. The cost of a skydive depends on a few factors, such as the location of the dropzone and the type of plane.

Location

Skydive Key West is a destination skydiving center for obvious reasons. Not only will you experience breathtaking views as you soar above the Florida Keys, but you’ll also see the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida Straits all in one glorious sweep! A skydive without spectacular sights is incredible, but a skydive with a backdrop like ours is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Aircraft type

The type of airplane used for skydiving determines the height (or altitude) that a skydive is made from, how fast that altitude is reached, and how many people can fit in the airplane at once. Our Cessna 182 – considered the workhorse of the skydiving industry – can accommodate two tandem pairs at a time.

Why Is Skydiving So Expensive?

Some can’t believe that skydiving is so expensive, and others can’t believe that the barrier for entry to human flight isn’t more. Whichever side of the fence you land on, the same math goes into the equation: equipment maintenance, instructor compensation, fuel, and aircraft. Let’s take a closer look.

Equipment Maintenance

The type of gear a dropzone has and how they care for it matters. At Skydive Key West, we have best-in-class gear that we regularly inspect and meticulously maintain. Wear and tear over time requires repair or replacement, neither of which we mess around with. Safety first, always.

Instructor Experience

Qualified, experienced instructors bring invaluable expertise to each jump. Each has years of commitment to the sport, at least 500 hundred jumps (if not many thousands), and various certifications issued by the United States Parachute Association (USPA). Skydiving instructors are trained professionals who love getting to introduce first-timers to the sky.

Think about skydiving like a picture-perfect wedding cake. It may take a baker only a couple of days to get the cake ready for the big day, but there are years of training and dedication to their craft reflected in the cost. Of course, the stakes are much higher with skydiving. Adequate compensation is well deserved.

Fuel Costs

Aviation fuel isn’t cheap! Think of a skydiving flight like a carpool – we’d never expect one person to cover the full cost of fuel, sharing the ride (and the expense) among everyone on board helps keep the price of each jump more manageable.

Aircraft Upkeep

Planes are pricey! Regular maintenance and inspections of the aircraft are necessary to ensure it remains airworthy and ready for action.

Together, these factors create a baseline cost for skydiving that reflects the commitment to safety and quality, ensuring you have an unforgettably awesome experience when you jump! ave an unforgettably awesome experience when you jump!

How Much is a Skydiving License?

What about after your tandem skydive? How much does a skydiving license cost if you want to learn to go solo? Again, it depends on where you train to get your license and the learning opportunities on offer. Some dropzones offer what’s required by the USPA, and others go way above and beyond so that you’re confident and competent in the sky. There are four skydiving license levels: A, B, C, and D. The first is the A License which costs a few thousand dollars and a significant investment of time to achieve – and if you’ve been bitten by the skydiving bug, it is time and money well spent.
