Is Skydiving Worth It? | Skydive Key West Skip to Content

Skydive Key West Posted by: Skydive Key West 2 weeks ago

Is skydiving worth it? And if so, worth “what,” exactly? The cost? The time commitment? The risk? Everyone’s idea of something being worth it (or not) is subjective. For those who choose to skydive, the spectacular views and heart-pumping thrills outweigh the price tag or inherent risk.

When we weigh the concept of something being worth it, we have to think about why we’re doing the thing. Why do you want to skydive? Is it for the rush? The ability to say you did the dang thing? Or are you seeking a newfound freedom that can only be found in the sky? Whatever your ‘why,’ we’ll help you organize your thoughts and questions to make a well-informed, confident decision – let’s get into it!

Is Skydiving Worth The Money?

When it comes to skydiving, the cost is commonly one of the first considerations. It’s like when someone offers you a delicious piece of our famous key lime pie on a silver platter, only to snatch it away right before you dig in and tell you it’ll be $200 – ah! Discouraging, much? That would make you ponder – is a creamy piece of pie with a perfect graham cracker crust really worth it?

The skydiving cost is more than justified when you think about paying the instructor and pilot, fueling the airplane, upkeep of the gear, aircraft maintenance, compensating the parachute packer, and so much more.

Buuuut that may not help much, because a couple hundred bucks is still a couple hundred bucks. Right? That being said, the cost of a skydive is minuscule in comparison to many other things. Think about how many random subscriptions you have, how often you go out to eat, or (we’re hitting hard here) how many coffees you’ve bought this month. We would bet that if you didn’t eat out or buy coffee for say, two weeks, you would have enough moolah saved up to pay for a skydive!

What Are The Negatives of Skydiving?

The negatives of skydiving are minimal in volume, but significant in severity. What we mean is, going skydiving has tons of benefits, and when you successfully do it, it’s pretty freakin’ awesome.

On the flipside, we won’t sugar coat it – the biggest risk of skydiving is severe injury or death. Acknowledging the true risk of the sport makes us appreciate the strict rules, industry protocols, and significant technology we use to keep us jumping even more.

If ‘Should I go skydiving’ is a question you can’t get out of your mind, you should do a quick risk assessment. Skydiving is a very personal choice that should not be downplayed, and everyone’s assessment of skydiving risks and whether they’re worth it is different.

What Are The Benefits of Skydiving?

We could talk about the benefits of skydiving all day. Numerous mental and physical positives are a direct result of taking the leap:

Physical benefits of skydiving

Skydiving is an extreme sport. The “extreme” part relates to benefits for our brains, while the “sport” aspect gives us physical benefits. We work out nearly every muscle group during a jump. From climbing into the plane and resisting air that’s whipping by at over 100 mph, to having the agility to steer the parachute through the sky and land safely. Skydiving pushes our bodies to the max, resulting in more stamina.

Mental benefits of skydiving

The “extreme” aspect of skydiving gives it that magical euphoria. Skydiving is inherently challenging because it’s unnatural in nearly every way, so when we do conquer that, we thrive – dopamine and serotonin soar! And remember the stamina mentioned above? Skydiving provides that mentally, too. Proving to your brain that you can do hard things shows that we’re stronger than we think, giving us the motivation to try, try, again when things get tough.

What Is The Hardest Part Of Skydiving?

Skydiving is challenging all around, and that’s one of the reasons it’s such a fulfilling activity. Is parachuting scary? Sure! Not horrifying, but it can be a little intimidating, which contributes to the fear factor.

The hardest part of skydiving for many is the mental block they must conquer to get themselves to jump out of the plane. When we conquer a fear (like intentionally leaping from a plane mid-flight!), our brain learns that things we’re nervous about may not all be that bad.

Is Skydiving Worth Trying?

After reading this, you may be wondering if skydiving is worth the hype. And unfortunately, we can’t help you there – it’s an individual decision! We think skydiving is a wholly liberating, life-altering experience, but it only holds those benefits if it’s something you truly feel called to try out. Ready to experience the awe of human flight?
